The 54-year-old politician and medical doctor passed away on Friday, 14th September 2018, after a short illness. Dr. Hlongwa was a well-respected and dedicated leader who served the people of Gauteng with passion and commitment. He was appointed as the MEC for Health in 2009 and served in this position until 2014. During his tenure, he made significant contributions to the healthcare system in the province, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of many. Born in KwaZulu-Natal, Dr. Hlongwa completed his medical degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and later obtained a Master's degree in Public Health from the University of the Witwatersrand. He was a highly qualified and experienced medical professional, with a deep understanding of the healthcare needs of the people. As the MEC for Health, Dr. Hlongwa was instrumental in implementing various initiatives to improve the quality of healthcare services in Gauteng.
