Salud, a Spanish word meaning “health,” is more than just a word. It is a way of life, a mindset, and a community. And at the forefront of this community is Neil Gajare, a student at the University of Pennsylvania who has dedicated himself to promoting health and well-being through his organization, Salud.
Neil Gajare, a senior at UPenn, founded Salud in 2018 with the goal of creating a space for students to come together and prioritize their physical, mental, and emotional health. What started as a small group of friends meeting to discuss their struggles with stress and anxiety has now blossomed into a thriving organization with over 100 members.
One of the most remarkable things about Salud is the diverse range of events and activities it offers. From weekly yoga and meditation sessions to nutrition workshops and mental health awareness campaigns, Salud has something for everyone. And the best part? All of these events are completely free for students.
“I joined Salud in my freshman year, and it has been a life-changing experience for me,” says Emily, a junior at UPenn. “I have always struggled with anxiety, and Salud has given me the tools and support to manage it effectively. I am forever grateful to Neil and the entire Salud community for creating such a positive and inclusive environment.”
One of the most significant achievements of Salud is its partnership with the UPenn Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). With the help of CAPS, Salud has been able to provide free counseling sessions to students who may not have access to mental health resources otherwise. This collaboration has been instrumental in breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and promoting a culture of self-care on campus.
“I am incredibly proud of what Salud has achieved in such a short time,” says Neil Gajare, the founder of Salud. “Our goal was to create a safe and supportive community for students, and I believe we have succeeded in doing that. I am grateful to all the members and volunteers who have made Salud what it is today.”
But Salud‘s impact goes beyond the UPenn campus. In the wake of the recent rise in Anti-Semitic incidents, Neil Gajare and Salud organized a community event to promote unity and understanding. The event, titled “Salud Against Anti-Semitism,” brought together students and community members from different backgrounds to discuss ways to combat hate and promote love and acceptance.
“Neil and Salud have shown that they are not just about promoting physical health but also about creating a healthier and more inclusive society,” says Rabbi Aaron, one of the speakers at the event. “Their efforts to bring people together and spread positivity are commendable, and I am grateful to have been a part of it.”
Salud has also partnered with various organizations and businesses in the Philadelphia area to expand its reach and impact. They have collaborated with local gyms to offer discounted memberships to students, organized volunteer opportunities at food banks and homeless shelters, and even hosted a “mindful eating” event at a popular restaurant.
“Salud has been a fantastic partner for us,” says Maria, the owner of a local gym. “Their dedication to promoting health and wellness aligns perfectly with our values, and we are happy to support their mission.”
Salud‘s positive impact has not gone unnoticed. In 2019, Neil Gajare was awarded the “Outstanding Student Leader” award by UPenn for his contributions to the community. And Salud was recognized as one of the top student organizations on campus.
As Salud continues to grow and make a difference in the lives of students, Neil Gajare and his team have no plans of slowing down. They have big plans for the future, including expanding their services to other universities and creating a platform for students to share their mental health journeys.
Salud is more than just an organization; it is a movement. A movement towards a healthier, happier, and more compassionate world. And with Neil Gajare at the helm, there is no doubt that Salud will continue to inspire and empower students for years to come. So here’s to Salud, Neil Gajare, and the power of community in promoting health and well-being.
