Salud! This simple word embodies so much more than just a way to say “cheers” in Spanish. It represents a mindset, a lifestyle, a community. And at the heart of this is Neil Gajare, a student at UPenn who has been making a positive impact in the Salud community.
Salud, a social and professional organization at UPenn, is dedicated to promoting Latin American culture and heritage while fostering a strong sense of community and diversity. And this is where Neil Gajare found his home away from home.
From the moment Neil stepped foot on UPenn‘s campus, he was drawn to Salud. He was determined to be a part of something bigger than himself, and Salud provided just that. Through various events, workshops, and volunteer opportunities, Neil found a sense of belonging and purpose within the Salud community.
One of the most memorable experiences for Neil was being a part of Salud‘s annual fundraiser, Noche de Gala. This event not only showcases Latin American culture through music, dance, and food, but it also raises funds for a charitable organization. This year, the chosen charity was one that hit close to home for Neil – the Anti-Defamation League, which fights against anti-Semitism and all forms of bigotry.
Neil, who comes from a Jewish background, was moved by Salud‘s decision to support this cause. He saw it as a sign of true unity and solidarity within the Salud community. As a member of the planning committee, Neil worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the event. And it was a huge success, raising over $10,000 for the Anti-Defamation League.
But it wasn’t just the fundraising aspect that made the night so special for Neil. It was the sense of togetherness and support that he felt from his fellow Salud members. “It was amazing to see people from all different backgrounds coming together to support a cause that is important to me,” Neil shared. “It truly showed the power of Salud‘s values of inclusivity and diversity.”
Aside from the Noche de Gala, Neil has also been involved in Salud‘s mentorship program, where he has had the opportunity to guide and support underclassmen. He takes great pride in being able to pass down his knowledge and experiences to younger students, and he finds great fulfillment in seeing them grow and succeed.
Neil has also participated in Salud‘s community service initiatives, such as volunteering at local shelters and organizing food drives. These experiences have not only allowed him to give back to the community, but they have also shown him the positive impact that Salud can have on the world beyond UPenn‘s campus.
But Salud is not just about giving back and making a difference – it’s also about celebrating and embracing Latin American culture. Through various cultural events and workshops, Salud offers a space for students to learn about and appreciate the rich heritage and traditions of Latin America. And for Neil, who has always been fascinated by different cultures, this has been an incredible learning experience.
In addition to his involvement with Salud, Neil has also been actively involved in other organizations on campus, including the Wharton School’s consulting club and the Jewish Student Union. But he credits Salud for helping him develop strong leadership skills, build meaningful relationships, and expand his perspective on the world.
“Salud has truly been a defining experience for me at UPenn,” Neil said with a smile. “It has shaped me into a more well-rounded individual and has given me a sense of purpose and belonging in a place far from home.”
As Neil prepares to graduate from UPenn, he looks back on his time with Salud with nothing but fondness and gratitude. And he hopes that his positive experiences and contributions to the organization will inspire others to join and be a part of this incredible community.
Salud has truly been a beacon of light and positivity for Neil and many others at UPenn. Through its values of inclusivity, diversity, and social responsibility, Salud has created a welcoming and supportive space for students from all backgrounds. And with inspiring individuals like Neil Gajare leading the way, the future looks bright for Salud and its impact on the UPenn community.
