Democrats bash Johnson for rejecting Senate DHS bill, urge support for discharge petition

House Democratic leaders are not holding back in their criticism of Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) for his decision to reject a bipartisan Senate bill that would have reopened most of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). In a strong statement released on Friday, the Democrats accused their Republican counterparts of willingly prolonging the partial government shutdown in order to appease their most conservative members.

The Senate bill, which had received overwhelming bipartisan support, aimed to fund the majority of the DHS operations through February 8th, giving lawmakers more time to negotiate a long-term solution for border security. However, Speaker Johnson and other Republican leaders refused to bring the bill to a vote in the House, citing concerns from their conservative colleagues about the lack of funding for President Trump’s proposed border wall.

This move has left many Democrats frustrated and angry, as they believe that the shutdown could have been avoided if Speaker Johnson had allowed the bill to move forward. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) stated, “The American people know that Republican priorities have nothing to do with making sure the government is fully operational and everything to do with pleasing their most extreme base.”

The partial government shutdown, which has now entered its fourth week, has caused significant disruption and hardship for many Americans. Around 800,000 federal employees are either furloughed or working without pay, and crucial government services such as airport security and food inspections are being affected. Despite this, Speaker Johnson and his fellow Republicans are refusing to budge on their demands for funding for a border wall.

House Democratic Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) called out the Republicans for their lack of concern for the American people, saying, “It’s time for our Republican colleagues to do their job and reopen the government. It’s time to end this nonsense of holding the American people hostage for a wasteful, ineffective and immoral border wall.”

The Democrats also pointed out the irony in the fact that the very department responsible for securing the nation’s borders and keeping Americans safe is being forced to operate with reduced resources and staff due to the shutdown. House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) stated, “This shutdown is putting our national security at risk, and it’s all because Speaker Johnson and his Republican colleagues are more concerned with pleasing President Trump than doing what’s best for the country.”

The Democrats are not alone in their criticism of Speaker Johnson’s actions. Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) has also expressed her frustration with the continued shutdown, saying, “We need to get the government open. I don’t think it’s wise for anyone to say, ‘We’ll only do this if you give me that.'”

As the shutdown continues, more and more Americans are feeling the effects. Small businesses that rely on federal contracts are struggling, and many families are worried about how they will pay their bills or put food on the table without their paychecks. It is clear that the longer the shutdown drags on, the more harm it will cause to the American people.

It is time for Speaker Johnson and his Republican colleagues to put aside their political agendas and do what is best for the country. The Democrats have made it clear that they are willing to work towards a compromise that will reopen the government, but they need their Republican counterparts to come to the table and negotiate in good faith.

In the words of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), “This shutdown needs to end. The American people deserve better than this political gamesmanship. It’s time for Speaker Johnson to put the well-being of the American people above his own political interests.” The ball is now in the Republicans’ court, and it is up to them to end this unnecessary and harmful shutdown.
