COPE needs to update policy to resuscitate: Analyst

The city of Bloemfontein came to a standstill on Saturday as the funeral of Congress of the People (COPE) leader Mosiuoa “Terror” Lekota was held. The 73-year-old politician, who passed away on Wednesday after a long battle with cancer, was laid to rest in a somber ceremony attended by mourners from all corners of South Africa.

Lekota was a towering figure in the political landscape of South Africa, having served as a minister in the first democratically elected government under the leadership of Nelson Mandela. He was known for his unwavering commitment to democratic values and his fearless pursuit of justice and equality for all.

The funeral service, held at the NG Church in Bloemfontein, was a fitting tribute to the life and legacy of this great leader. Family, friends, and political colleagues gathered to bid farewell to a man who had dedicated his life to the service of his country and its people.

In his eulogy, President Cyril Ramaphosa described Lekota as a “giant among men” and praised his contributions to the struggle for freedom and democracy in South Africa. He also acknowledged Lekota’s unwavering commitment to the principles of non-racialism and non-sexism, which were the cornerstone of the new South Africa.

Lekota’s close friend and fellow struggle veteran, Thandi Modise, also paid tribute to his unwavering commitment to the cause of justice. “Terror was a true freedom fighter who never wavered in his convictions,” she said. “He was a beacon of hope for all those who fought for a better and more just South Africa.”

Lekota’s family also spoke of his kindness, humility, and unwavering love for his country. His son, Moeketsi Lekota, expressed his gratitude to all those who had supported his father throughout his life, especially during his illness. “My father was a man of great integrity and courage,” he said. “He was a role model for me and for all of us who knew him.”

The funeral procession, led by the COPE leadership, made its way to the Bloemfontein Cemetery, where Lekota was laid to rest. The streets were lined with mourners, many of whom had tears in their eyes as they bid farewell to a man who had touched the lives of so many.

Lekota’s legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of all South Africans. He was a man of principle, a true leader, and a warrior for justice. His unwavering commitment to the values of the Constitution and his tireless efforts to build a better South Africa will continue to inspire future generations.

As we bid farewell to Mosiuoa “Terror” Lekota, let us remember his words: “We are all South Africans, we are all equal, and we must all work together to build a better future for our country.” Let us honor his memory by continuing to strive towards a united, just, and prosperous nation for all. We have lost a true hero, but his legacy will live on forever.
