FS Premier hails Lekota’s ‘immense’ contribution to democracy

Former South African politician and activist Mosiuoa Lekota passed away on Wednesday at the age of 77. His passing has left the nation in a state of mourning as we remember his impactful life and legacy.

Lekota was born on August 13th, 1948 in Kroonstad, Free State. He grew up in a time of racial segregation and injustice, which fueled his passion for fighting for equality and freedom for all South Africans. He was a staunch anti-apartheid activist and played a significant role in the struggle against the oppressive regime.

Lekota’s political journey began in the 1970s when he joined the Black Consciousness Movement and later became a member of the South African Students’ Organisation. He was a fearless leader and was not afraid to speak out against the injustices of the apartheid government. His activism and strong leadership skills caught the attention of the African National Congress (ANC), and he was elected as a member of the National Executive Committee in 1991.

In 1994, with the end of apartheid, Lekota was elected as the Premier of the Free State province. He was a dedicated and hardworking leader, and under his leadership, the province saw significant economic and social development. He also played a crucial role in promoting reconciliation and unity among all South Africans.

In 1999, Lekota was appointed as the Minister of Defence in President Thabo Mbeki’s cabinet, where he made significant contributions to the restructuring and modernization of the South African National Defence Force. He also served as the Minister of Agriculture and Land Affairs and the Minister of Defense and Military Veterans in subsequent years.

In 2008, Lekota made headlines when he broke away from the ANC and formed the Congress of the People (COPE). He believed that the ANC had deviated from its core values and principles, and he wanted to create a political alternative that would better serve the interests of all South Africans. He was a visionary leader who always put the needs of the people first.

Lekota’s passing has left a void in the political landscape of South Africa. He was a true leader who dedicated his life to the service of his country and its people. He was a man of integrity, courage, and unwavering principles. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations to fight for justice and equality.

The outpouring of tributes and condolences from all corners of the country is a testament to the impact Lekota had on the lives of many. President Cyril Ramaphosa described him as a “gallant fighter for freedom and democracy” and praised his contribution to the struggle for a non-racial, non-sexist, and democratic South Africa.

Lekota’s passing is a reminder to us all to continue his legacy and to strive towards building a better South Africa for all. He will be greatly missed, but his legacy will live on through the many lives he touched and the positive changes he brought about.

In his own words, Lekota once said, “The struggle for a better South Africa must continue, and we will only succeed if we stand together, united in our diversity.” Let us honor his memory by standing together and working towards a united, prosperous, and peaceful nation.

Rest in peace, Mosiuoa Lekota. Your contributions to our country will never be forgotten.
