South Africa has lost a prominent political figure with the passing of Congress of the People (COPE) leader Mosiuoa Lekota at the age of 77. Lekota, a stalwart in the fight against apartheid and a respected leader in the post-apartheid era, passed away on the 5th of August 2021, leaving behind a legacy of courage, determination, and dedication to the betterment of the country.
Lekota was born on the 13th of August 1943 in Kroonstad, Free State, and grew up in a politically active family. He joined the African National Congress (ANC) at a young age and became a prominent member of the party’s youth league. He played a crucial role in the fight against apartheid, participating in various protests and campaigns to bring an end to the oppressive regime.
In 1974, Lekota was arrested and sentenced to 12 years in prison for his anti-apartheid activities. He served his sentence on Robben Island alongside other struggle icons such as Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, and Ahmed Kathrada. Despite the harsh conditions, Lekota remained committed to the cause and continued to fight for a democratic South Africa.
After his release from prison in 1982, Lekota continued to be an active member of the ANC, serving in various leadership positions. He played a significant role in the negotiations for a democratic South Africa and was a key figure in the drafting of the country’s constitution.
In 2008, Lekota, along with other ANC members, broke away from the party to form the Congress of the People (COPE). The party aimed to address the growing concerns of corruption and lack of accountability within the ANC. Lekota was elected as the party’s first president and led COPE until his passing.
Throughout his political career, Lekota remained committed to the values of democracy, equality, and social justice. He was a vocal critic of corruption and spoke out against any actions that threatened the country’s democracy. He was also a strong advocate for the rights of all South Africans, regardless of race or background.
Lekota’s passing has left a void in South African politics, and many have paid tribute to his contributions to the country. President Cyril Ramaphosa described him as a “gallant fighter for freedom and democracy” and praised his leadership and unwavering commitment to the country.
The COPE party also released a statement mourning the loss of their leader, stating that “South Africa has lost a true patriot and a fearless leader.” They praised Lekota’s integrity and dedication to the party’s values and promised to continue his legacy of fighting for a better South Africa.
Lekota’s passing has also sparked an outpouring of condolences from various political parties, civil society organizations, and ordinary South Africans. Many have shared stories of his impact on their lives and the country, highlighting his role in shaping South Africa into the democratic nation it is today.
As we mourn the loss of a great leader, let us also remember and celebrate his life and the impact he has had on our country. Lekota’s unwavering dedication to the fight against apartheid and his continued efforts to build a better South Africa will forever be remembered and honored.
His passing is a reminder of the sacrifices made by many in the struggle for freedom and democracy in South Africa. Lekota’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations to fight for a just and equal society.
