ANC must go back to basics to regain public confidence: Ramaphosa

Ramaphosa Addresses ANC’s 5th National General Council in Boksburg

The African National Congress (ANC) held its 5th National General Council (NGC) in Boksburg, Gauteng from the 3rd to the 6th of October. The event was attended by thousands of delegates, including ANC members, alliance partners, and invited guests. The NGC is a crucial gathering for the ANC, as it serves as a mid-term review of the organization’s policies and programs. The theme for this year’s NGC was ‘Unity, Renewal and Growth towards the National Democratic Society’.

The highlight of the NGC was the keynote address delivered by the President of the ANC, Cyril Ramaphosa. In his speech, President Ramaphosa emphasized the importance of unity within the ANC, stating that it is the cornerstone of the party’s success. He called on all members to put aside their differences and work towards a common goal of building a better South Africa for all.

President Ramaphosa also addressed the challenges facing the party, including corruption, factionalism, and divisions. He acknowledged that these issues have caused a strain on the ANC’s credibility and must be addressed urgently. He urged all members to unite and fight against corruption, stating that it is a cancer that is eating away at the fabric of our society.

The President also touched on the economy and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. He praised the efforts of the ANC-led government in managing the pandemic and highlighted the need for economic recovery and growth. He reaffirmed the ANC’s commitment to a just and equitable society, where all South Africans have equal opportunities to succeed.

The NGC also provided a platform for the ANC to reflect on its achievements and challenges since the last NGC in 2015. President Ramaphosa highlighted the progress made in areas such as education, health, and social welfare. He also acknowledged the need for improvement in areas such as job creation, crime reduction, and land reform.

The President also addressed the issue of gender-based violence, stating that it is a national crisis that requires urgent attention. He called for stricter laws and harsher punishment for perpetrators of violence against women and children. He also emphasized the need for education and awareness to change societal attitudes towards gender-based violence.

The ANC’s alliance partners, including the South African Communist Party (SACP) and Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), also had the opportunity to address the NGC. They echoed President Ramaphosa’s sentiments on unity and called for a more united front in addressing the challenges facing the country.

The NGC also provided a platform for robust discussions and debates on various issues, including the state of the economy, land reform, and social cohesion. Delegates from all provinces had the opportunity to voice their concerns and make recommendations for the way forward.

In his closing remarks, President Ramaphosa reiterated the need for the ANC to unite and work towards a common goal. He urged all members to embrace the principles of unity, renewal, and growth in all their actions. He also encouraged all South Africans to join hands in building a better future for the country.

The ANC’s 5th National General Council was a resounding success, with a renewed sense of unity and purpose amongst its members. President Ramaphosa’s speech was well received, with many praising his call for unity and his commitment to fighting corruption. The NGC has set the tone for the ANC’s future, as the party continues to work towards a better South Africa for all.
