Burglars broke into man’s house twice in one night and set his car alight

Burglars broke into a man's house twice in one night and stole his car before setting it on fire. During the second burglary, they woke the victim who told the thieves "What the f*** are you doing?".

Dominic Wright, 40, and Ian Powell, 45, burgled the home of Thomas Raikes in Cardiff in the early hours of August 10 this year. Wright carried out the initial burglary at around 1.38am, when he entered the house as the victim was asleep in bed.

A sentencing hearing at Newport Crown Court on Thursday, November 30 heard Wright took a mobile phone, earbuds, a rucksack, a wallet containing bank cards, a laptop worth £2,000 and a set of keys for a Skoda Fabia. The mobile phone was right next to Mr Raikes' bed with the defendant entering his bedroom and taking it as he slept.

After the burglary, Wright returned to the Blue Dragon hostel in Newport Road where he met with Powell and they returned to Mr Raikes' address in Roath to take the Skoda. They then drove to an Esso petrol station where they used the victim's bank card to purchase £29 of cigarettes and other items. They attempted to spend another £79 but the transaction was refused.
