Urgent ‘do not eat’ warning over five types of cheese after possible E. coli contamination

Five types of cheese have been recalled as a precaution due to a possible E.coli contamination. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) announced the recall for some Mrs Kirkham’s cheese products on Christmas Eve.

The products affected are Mrs Kirkham's Mild and Creamy Lancashire, Mrs Kirkham’s Tasty Lancashire, Mrs Kirkham’s Mature Lancashire and Mrs Kirkham’s Smoked Lancashire on Christmas Eve.

On Christmas Day, the FSA updated an alert advising that Route des Terroirs is also recalling Morbier Maison Monts & Terroirs Chalet De Vevy Raw Cows’ Milk Cheese "because Shiga toxin-producing E. Coli has been found in some batches of this product". The recall notice said: "Symptoms caused by STEC organisms include severe diarrhoea (including bloody diarrhoea), abdominal pain, and sometimes haemolytic uremic syndrome, (HUS), a serious condition that can lead to kidney failure and can be fatal."
