Exciting news from Paris! After nearly a century, the French government has given the green light for swimming in the famous Seine River. The city had banned swimming in the river almost 100 years ago due to its polluted waters, but now, thanks to a historic river clean-up, swimmers and divers will soon be able to enjoy the Seine once again.
The decision to allow swimming in the Seine comes as a part of Paris’ preparation for the upcoming Olympics, scheduled to be held in the city in the summer of 2024. Despite improvements made in the last two decades to prevent bacteria from entering the river, the challenge was achieving the final few percentage points required to officially classify the Seine as clean. However, significant progress has been made, and the deputy Paris mayor in charge of the Olympics, Pierre Rabadan, expressed confidence that the sight of athletes swimming in the Seine during the Olympics will inspire public confidence in the river’s cleanliness. The river’s restoration efforts have been ongoing, and when the work is complete, mayor Anne Hidalgo revealed that three designated spots on the Seine will be open for public bathing starting from the summer of 2025.
