Raskin asks White House physician for ‘comprehensive cognitive assessment’ of Trump

Democratic Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland is calling for a thorough evaluation of President Donald Trump’s cognitive abilities. In a letter addressed to the White House physician, Sean Barbabella, Raskin expressed concern over the president’s recent words and actions, particularly those related to the Iran war.

Raskin, who serves on the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees, cited several instances where Trump’s behavior raised red flags. He pointed to the president’s erratic decision-making and contradicting statements regarding the assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani. Raskin also highlighted Trump’s false claims about the threat posed by Iran and his tweet threatening to target cultural sites, which is considered a war crime.

Given these events, Raskin urged Barbabella to conduct a thorough evaluation of Trump’s mental and cognitive well-being. The congressman emphasized the importance of ensuring that the president is fit to make crucial decisions that could have significant consequences for the nation and the world.

Raskin’s request comes as no surprise, as the issue of Trump’s mental health has been a topic of speculation and concern throughout his presidency. The letter also follows the recent release of a book by White House insider, Michael Wolff, which claims that several members of Trump’s inner circle have questioned his mental stability.

In his letter, Raskin made it clear that this is not a political attack on the president, but rather a legitimate concern for his mental fitness. He stated, “This is not about politics or partisanship, but about the safety and security of our nation. The American people deserve to know that their president is mentally and emotionally capable of handling the responsibilities of the office.”

While Trump has not publicly responded to Raskin’s request, he has previously dismissed concerns about his mental health and labeled them as “fake news.” However, with the increasing tension and potential for conflict with Iran, it is crucial to ensure that the president is mentally capable of making sound decisions.

Raskin’s letter has also sparked a debate about whether there should be a standard mental health evaluation for all presidential candidates. Currently, there are no specific requirements for candidates to release medical records or undergo a mental health evaluation, leaving it up to their own discretion.

This is not the first time Raskin has openly expressed concerns about the president’s mental state. In 2017, he drafted a bill that would establish a panel of medical and psychiatric experts to assess the mental and physical fitness of the president. The bill, known as the Oversight Commission on Presidential Capacity Act, has yet to receive a vote in Congress.

Raskin’s call for a cognitive evaluation of Trump has also sparked a conversation about the role of the White House physician. While the position is considered apolitical and nonpartisan, some argue that the physician may be influenced by the president and his administration.

In response to Raskin’s letter, the White House physician released a statement saying that Trump is “in excellent health.” However, Barbabella did not address the issue of cognitive abilities or whether he would conduct a further evaluation.

In the midst of a tumultuous political climate and concerns about Trump’s decision-making, Raskin’s call for a cognitive evaluation of the president is a necessary step to ensure the safety and well-being of the nation. It is crucial for the White House physician to take this request seriously and conduct a thorough evaluation, without any influence or bias. The American people deserve to have a mentally fit and competent leader at the helm of the nation.
