The year was 1994, and a new series called “Peaky Blinders” was about to take the world by storm. Little did anyone know, the iconic track that served as the theme song to this series would go on to become a timeless classic. This track, of course, is none other than “Red Right Hand” by the legendary musician Nick Cave.
Fast forward to present day, and “Peaky Blinders” is still going strong, with five seasons under its belt and a highly anticipated sixth season on the horizon. But now, fans have even more to look forward to with the release of “Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man” movie. And with this movie comes a new version of “Red Right Hand” by none other than Cillian Murphy and Grian Chatten.
In an exclusive interview with NME, both Murphy and Chatten opened up about their experience recording this new version of “Red Right Hand” and what it means to them to be a part of the “Peaky Blinders” universe.
For those who may not know, Cillian Murphy is the actor who plays the infamous Tommy Shelby in the series, while Grian Chatten is the lead singer of the Dublin-based band Fontaines D.C. who have gained worldwide recognition for their raw and energetic music.
When asked about their thoughts on recording a new version of “Red Right Hand” for the movie, both Murphy and Chatten expressed their excitement and gratitude. Murphy shared, “It was such an honor to be asked to record this iconic track. We wanted to bring our own energy and interpretation to it while still staying true to the original version. It was a challenging but incredibly rewarding experience.”
Chatten added, “Growing up, I was a huge fan of Nick Cave and ‘Peaky Blinders’, so being able to be a part of this project is a dream come true. It’s such a powerful and gripping song, and I think our version brings a new intensity to it.”
But what makes this new version of “Red Right Hand” even more special is the fact that both Murphy and Chatten recorded it in the same studio where Nick Cave himself recorded the original version. Murphy shared, “Being in the same studio where Nick recorded the original version was a surreal experience. We could feel his presence and it was almost like he was guiding us.”
Fans of “Peaky Blinders” and Nick Cave can expect a more stripped-down and raw version of “Red Right Hand” in the movie. Chatten explained, “We wanted to bring a more punk rock vibe to the song, so we kept it very minimalistic with just drums, bass, and vocals. We wanted to capture the essence of the lyrics and the dark and mysterious tone of the series.”
And what do the creators of “Peaky Blinders” think of this new version? Show creator Steven Knight expressed his excitement, saying, “I couldn’t think of a better team to record a new version of ‘Red Right Hand’ for the movie. Cillian’s haunting vocals and Grian’s raw energy bring a whole new dimension to the song, and I can’t wait for fans to hear it.”
The release of this new version of “Red Right Hand” has fans buzzing with excitement, and it’s clear that Murphy and Chatten have done justice to this iconic track. The combination of Murphy’s haunting vocals and Chatten’s raw energy make for a powerful and gripping rendition of the song.
So, as we eagerly await the release of “Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man” movie, we can also look forward to this new version of “Red Right Hand” and the impact it will have on the already iconic “Peaky Blinders” franchise. One thing is for sure, this new version of “Red Right Hand” is bound to become a classic in its own right and will continue to be a fan favorite for years to come.
