Last week, South Africa lost a great leader and a true patriot. Mosiuoa Patrick Lekota, fondly known as “Terror”, passed away at the age of 73. He will be remembered as a fearless freedom fighter, a dedicated public servant, and a beloved father and husband. His passing has left a void in the hearts of many, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
Lekota’s journey began in Kroonstad, a small town in the Free State province of South Africa. He was born on 13 August 1948, during the height of apartheid. Growing up in a racially segregated society, Lekota witnessed firsthand the injustices and inequalities faced by black South Africans. This fueled his passion for justice and equality, and he became actively involved in the struggle against apartheid.
In the 1970s, Lekota joined the African National Congress (ANC) and became a prominent member of the party’s military wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe. He played a crucial role in the armed struggle against the oppressive apartheid regime, risking his life for the freedom of his people. Lekota was arrested and imprisoned several times for his activism, but he never wavered in his commitment to the cause.
After the unbanning of political parties in 1990, Lekota continued to serve the ANC in various leadership positions. He was elected as the first Premier of the Free State province in 1994, and later served as the Minister of Defence and Minister of Defence and Military Veterans. He was also a member of parliament and served as the President of the Congress of the People (COPE) political party.
Lekota was a visionary leader who always put the needs of his people first. He was known for his unwavering principles and his dedication to the values of democracy, equality, and justice. He was a true servant of the people, and his tireless efforts to improve the lives of all South Africans will never be forgotten.
On Saturday, 21 August, Lekota will be laid to rest in his hometown of Bloemfontein. The funeral service will be held at the Dr. Rantlai Petrus Molemela Stadium, and it is expected to be attended by thousands of mourners from all over the country. This is a testament to the impact that Lekota had on the lives of so many people.
As we bid farewell to this great leader, let us remember his legacy and the lessons he taught us. Lekota believed in the power of unity and the importance of standing up for what is right. He showed us that change is possible, and that we all have a role to play in building a better future for our country.
Lekota’s passing is a great loss to South Africa, but his memory will live on through the many lives he touched and the positive changes he brought about. Let us honor his memory by continuing his work and striving for a more just and equal society. May his soul rest in peace.
