Slight increase in number of wards for upcoming LGE: IEC

MDB Chair Invites Communities to Submit Proposals on Ward Constitutions

The Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) Chairperson, Thabo Manyoni, has extended an invitation to communities across South Africa to submit proposals on how wards should be constituted. This call comes as the MDB prepares to review and determine the boundaries of wards for the upcoming local government elections.

In a recent statement, Manyoni emphasized the importance of community involvement in the ward demarcation process. He stated that the MDB is committed to ensuring that the voices of communities are heard and taken into consideration when making decisions that affect them.

The MDB is responsible for determining the boundaries of wards in municipalities, which are used to elect councillors who represent the interests of their communities. These boundaries are reviewed every five years to ensure that they are in line with population changes and to promote effective and efficient local governance.

Manyoni highlighted that the MDB has already received numerous submissions from various stakeholders, including political parties, traditional leaders, and civil society organizations. However, he stressed the need for communities to also have a say in the ward demarcation process.

He stated, “Communities are the heart of our democracy, and their participation in the ward demarcation process is crucial. We want to hear from them about their needs, concerns, and suggestions on how wards should be constituted in their areas.”

Manyoni also assured that all proposals submitted by communities will be carefully considered by the MDB. He emphasized that the board is committed to ensuring that the ward boundaries are fair, equitable, and reflective of the needs and interests of communities.

The MDB has also taken steps to make the submission process more accessible and user-friendly for communities. They have set up a dedicated email address and a toll-free number for communities to submit their proposals. In addition, the board has also established a team of experts who will assist communities in preparing their submissions.

Manyoni urged communities to take advantage of this opportunity and actively participate in the ward demarcation process. He stated, “This is a chance for communities to have a direct impact on the governance of their areas. We encourage them to come forward and share their valuable insights with us.”

The MDB Chairperson also emphasized that the board is committed to transparency and accountability in the ward demarcation process. He assured that all proposals submitted by communities will be made public and that the board will provide regular updates on the progress of the review.

In conclusion, Manyoni reiterated the importance of community involvement in the ward demarcation process. He stated, “We believe that involving communities in the decision-making process will lead to more effective and accountable local governance. We urge all communities to take this opportunity to have their voices heard and help shape the future of their wards.”

The deadline for communities to submit their proposals is fast approaching, and the MDB encourages all interested parties to submit their suggestions before the closing date. With the active participation of communities, the MDB is confident that the upcoming local government elections will be conducted in a fair and transparent manner, ensuring the best possible representation for all South Africans.
