‘Police must fetch Letsoalo and physically bring him to Parliament’

COSATU Joins Calls for Action Against Former RAF CEO Letsoalo

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has joined the growing chorus of voices demanding action to be taken against former Road Accident Fund (RAF) CEO Collins Letsoalo. The trade union federation has called for swift and decisive action to be taken against Letsoalo, who has been accused of gross misconduct and mismanagement during his tenure at the RAF.

COSATU, which represents over 1.8 million workers across various industries, has expressed its deep concern over the allegations against Letsoalo and the impact it has had on the RAF and its employees. The trade union has called for accountability and justice to be served, not only for the sake of the RAF, but also for the thousands of South Africans who rely on the fund for compensation after being injured in road accidents.

In a statement released by COSATU, the federation’s General Secretary, Bheki Ntshalintshali, said, “We cannot allow individuals who are entrusted with public funds to abuse their power and enrich themselves at the expense of the people they are meant to serve. The allegations against Letsoalo are extremely serious and cannot be ignored. We call on the relevant authorities to take urgent action to investigate and prosecute those responsible for this gross misconduct.”

Letsoalo, who was appointed as the RAF CEO in 2017, has been accused of awarding himself a salary increase of over R2 million without the approval of the board. He has also been accused of irregularly awarding contracts to companies linked to his family members, resulting in millions of rands being lost by the RAF. These allegations have raised serious concerns about the governance and management of the fund, which is meant to provide financial support to victims of road accidents.

COSATU has also raised concerns about the impact of Letsoalo’s actions on the employees of the RAF. The fund has been facing financial challenges in recent years, resulting in a freeze on salary increases and a reduction in staff bonuses. The trade union has called for Letsoalo to be held accountable for his actions and for the fund to be stabilized to ensure the financial security of its employees.

The trade union federation has also called for a thorough investigation into the allegations against Letsoalo and for the findings to be made public. Ntshalintshali stated, “The public has a right to know what has been happening at the RAF and who is responsible for the mismanagement and misuse of funds. We urge the relevant authorities to conduct a transparent and independent investigation to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.”

COSATU’s call for action against Letsoalo has been echoed by other organizations and individuals, including the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU). The DA has called for Letsoalo to be criminally charged and for the Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, to be held accountable for the appointment of Letsoalo as the RAF CEO. SAFTU has also expressed its support for COSATU’s call for an investigation and has called for the RAF to be placed under administration to prevent further mismanagement.

In conclusion, COSATU’s call for action against former RAF CEO Letsoalo is a step in the right direction towards ensuring accountability and justice for the mismanagement of public funds. The trade union federation has shown its commitment to fighting corruption and ensuring that those responsible for wrongdoing are held accountable. It is now up to the relevant authorities to take the necessary action to restore the integrity of the RAF and to ensure that it fulfills its mandate of providing financial support to those in need.
