Mashatile delivers the keynote address at the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation Legacy Business Breakfast
Johannesburg – On Tuesday, the 15th of October, the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation hosted its annual Legacy Business Breakfast at the Sandton Convention Centre. The event, which aims to promote the legacy of struggle icon Ahmed Kathrada, was attended by prominent business leaders, government officials, and members of civil society. The highlight of the morning was the keynote address delivered by the Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Lebogang Maile.
In his address, MEC Maile emphasized the importance of preserving the legacy of Ahmed Kathrada and other struggle heroes. He highlighted the need for the younger generation to understand and appreciate the sacrifices made by these icons in the fight against apartheid. “We must never forget the struggles of our past, for they have shaped our present and will continue to guide our future,” he said.
MEC Maile also spoke about the role of business in promoting social and economic transformation. He urged businesses to not only focus on profit-making but also to contribute towards building a more equitable society. “We need businesses that are not only successful but also socially responsible,” he stated.
The MEC also touched on the issue of youth unemployment, which he described as a “ticking time bomb.” He stressed the importance of creating opportunities for young people to enter the job market and become active participants in the economy. “We need to invest in our youth and equip them with the necessary skills to succeed in the business world,” he said.
The event was also an opportunity for the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation to showcase its various initiatives aimed at promoting social justice and equality. These include the Kathrada Leadership Programme, which provides leadership training to young people, and the Kathrada Foundation Youth Clubs, which engage young people in community development projects.
The breakfast was attended by a diverse group of individuals, including representatives from the private sector, government, and civil society. This was a testament to the widespread support for the work of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation and its mission to promote a non-racial, non-sexist, and democratic South Africa.
In his closing remarks, MEC Maile encouraged all attendees to continue supporting the Foundation’s initiatives and to work towards building a more inclusive and prosperous society. “Let us all be inspired by the legacy of Ahmed Kathrada and strive towards a better future for all,” he concluded.
The event was a resounding success, with attendees leaving feeling motivated and inspired to make a positive impact in their communities. The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation continues to play a crucial role in preserving the legacy of struggle heroes and promoting social justice in South Africa. As we reflect on the words of MEC Maile, let us remember that it is up to each and every one of us to continue the fight for a better tomorrow.
