Ramaphosa deplores the state of Gauteng, municipalities

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his deep concern over the current state of Gauteng and its municipalities. In a recent speech, he deplored the deteriorating condition of the province and urged for immediate action to address the issues at hand.

Gauteng, the smallest yet most populous province in South Africa, has long been hailed as the economic hub of the country. With its bustling cities, thriving industries and diverse population, it has been the pride of the nation. However, in recent times, the province has been struggling with a number of challenges, ranging from poor service delivery to financial mismanagement.

President Ramaphosa, in his speech, highlighted the alarming state of Gauteng’s municipalities, which he described as “in a state of disarray”. He expressed his disappointment at the lack of accountability and transparency in the management of these municipalities, which has resulted in the neglect of basic services such as water, electricity and sanitation.

The President also touched upon the issue of financial mismanagement, citing the recent Auditor-General’s report which revealed that 85% of Gauteng’s municipalities were in a state of financial distress. This, he emphasized, not only affects the delivery of services to the people but also hinders the economic growth of the province.

But amidst these challenges, President Ramaphosa remained optimistic and called for a collective effort to turn things around. He stressed the need for all stakeholders, including government officials, business leaders, and citizens, to work together towards finding sustainable solutions.

In his address, the President outlined a number of measures that will be taken to address the crisis in Gauteng. These include the deployment of experienced and capable individuals to oversee the management of struggling municipalities, the implementation of stricter financial controls, and the introduction of performance-based contracts for municipal officials.

President Ramaphosa also announced the establishment of a task team that will be responsible for monitoring the progress and ensuring accountability in the implementation of these measures. He urged the people of Gauteng to actively participate in this process and to report any instances of corruption and maladministration.

The President’s speech has been met with a positive response from various sectors of society. Business leaders have pledged their support and commitment to working with the government in finding solutions to the challenges facing Gauteng. Civil society organizations have also welcomed the President’s call for transparency and accountability in the management of municipalities.

As citizens, it is our responsibility to hold our leaders accountable and to collaborate with them in finding solutions to the problems we face. The state of Gauteng is a reflection of our collective actions, and it is up to us to work towards making it a better place for all.

President Ramaphosa’s passion and determination to address the issues in Gauteng is a testament to his commitment to the well-being of the country. His call for unity and collaboration is a reminder that when we work together, we can overcome any challenge.

Let us heed the President’s call and join hands in rebuilding Gauteng. Let us hold our leaders accountable and demand transparency and good governance. Let us all work towards making Gauteng a province we can all be proud of once again. As President Ramaphosa said, “Together, we can and we will turn Gauteng around.”
