The Joint Meeting of the Committee of Ministers responsible for the Energy and Water sectors of SADC will take place in Luanda from May 27 to 30

Yesterday, on May 27, the Joint Meeting of the Committee of Ministers Responsible for the Energy and Water Sectors commenced. The event was led by Minister João Baptista Borges, who emphasized the importance of discussing and preparing critical issues for the committees’ consideration and approval.

In the energy sector, the discussions focused on progress since the last ministerial meeting, energy supply security, and advancements in the SADC Priority Areas for the Sustainable Development of the Regional Energy Sector. The Proposal for the Development of a Regional Infrastructure Financing Facility (RTIFF) was also discussed. Other topics included the review of the Agreement amending the 1996 SADC Energy Protocol, regional regulatory initiatives, and the promotion of renewable energy sources, as well as the formal establishment of SACREEE as a legal entity.

In the water sector, ministers assessed progress in regional initiatives to improve water and sanitation services, cross-border water projects, and the development of regional infrastructure. Progress in the implementation of the regional groundwater program and combined water, energy, and food initiatives was also discussed.

The Southern African Development Community (SADC), established in 1980 and transformed into its current form in 1992, comprises sixteen member states. The joint meeting will be preceded by an experts’ meeting from May 27 to 31, 2024.
