What are your thoughts on Corcho Rodríguez’s most recent project at Yellow Rose?

In 1998, when Corcho Rodríguez acquired Yellow Rose, a magnificent estate nestled in La Barra, Punta del Este, it attracted attention not only for its stunning location but also for the romantic tale intertwined with it. The presence of yellow roses symbolized his love story with Susana Giménez, a prominent television personality he was romantically involved with at the time. Following his separation from Susana, Corcho dedicated himself to transforming Yellow Rose into one of the most exquisite country estates in the region. Over time, it evolved into a diverse venue, incorporating a polo club and a winery.

To highlight his dedication to Uruguayan polo and signify his entry into the wine industry, Corcho hosted an elaborate barbecue event at Yellow Rose. Unbeknownst to many attendees, a house wine was served, devoid of any labels. This mystery wine received genuine acclaim, earning praise from seasoned experts such as Adolfo Cambiaso Sr. and Eduardo Costantini. Corcho revealed that they had been diligently crafting this wine for seven years, prioritizing quality over quantity.

Spanning four hectares, the vineyard at Yellow Rose cultivates a variety of grapes, including tannat, merlot, and pinot noir. Corcho favors pinot noir for its smoothness and full-bodied character, drawing inspiration from the renowned Romanée Conti wine and setting exceptionally high standards. Employing a hands-off approach, the vineyard practices natural cultivation without irrigation or chemicals, though it is not formally certified as organic. The inaugural production in 2011 yielded only a thousand bottles due to rigorous quality controls. Despite encountering obstacles in subsequent years, the current objective is to produce 5,000 bottles this year.

Corcho Rodríguez’s passion for winemaking extends beyond personal enjoyment, reflecting a profound comprehension of the craft. Although currently unavailable for commercial purchase, the wine aims for exclusive distribution in carefully selected restaurants and establishments, envisioned as the signature Yellow Rose house wine. As part of his commitment to the polo club, a companion book detailing Yellow Rose’s equestrian pursuits, club accomplishments, and lifestyle will accompany the wine, reinforcing its distinct identity beyond its varietals.
