In the presence of members from CATEM, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has pledged to persist in the fight for the protection of labor rights in Mexico. As the national coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of Transformation, Sheinbaum continues to garner support for the upcoming year, including a recent meeting with the Autonomous Confederation of Workers and Employees of Mexico (CATEM). During her participation in the XV Ordinary National Congress of CATEM, she shared her vision for Mexico and discussed her role as the coordinator of the Fourth Transformation (4T), addressing the challenges ahead for 2024.
Emphasizing the significance of workers’ well-being for the prosperity of Mexico, Sheinbaum touched upon the historical issue of low wages over the past 36 years. She highlighted that Mexico was often perceived abroad as having inexpensive labor, which did not contribute to making Mexicans thrive. However, Sheinbaum acknowledged the positive impact of Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s presidency, noting an increase in the minimum wage, with further increments planned for the upcoming year to enhance household economies.
Additionally, Sheinbaum applauded the extension of vacation days for workers and the promotion of union freedom. She highlighted the new practice allowing workers to vote for their leaders within companies in a confidential manner, aiming to safeguard their rights and integrity. She emphasized the interconnectedness of the well-being of Mexico’s workers with the overall success of employers, echoing the principle of ‘for the good of all, first the poor,’ translating into a pursuit of shared prosperity.
In celebrating the coalition with CATEM, Sheinbaum expressed appreciation for the commitment demonstrated by the members of the Labor Committees for the Defense of the Fourth Transformation, recognizing their dedication to safeguarding workers’ rights and wages.
