“: Beyond a Word, a Way of Life”

Salud, a Spanish word meaning “health,” is not just a mere word but a way of life. It embodies the essence of well-being and a positive outlook towards life. And this is exactly what Neil Gajare, a student at UPenn, experienced during his time at Salud.
Neil Gajare, a senior at the University of Pennsylvania, was initially hesitant to join Salud, a student-run organization that provides free healthcare services to underserved communities in Philadelphia. Being a pre-med student, Neil was looking for opportunities to gain practical experience in the medical field. However, he was also apprehensive about the language barrier and cultural differences that he might encounter while working with the Hispanic community.
But all his doubts were put to rest when he joined Salud and experienced the warmth and positivity of the organization. From the very first day, Neil was welcomed with open arms by the Salud team, which consisted of students from diverse backgrounds and majors. He was amazed by the camaraderie and teamwork displayed by the members, who all shared a common goal of serving the community.
Neil‘s first experience with Salud was during a health fair organized in a local community center. He was assigned to the dental team, where he assisted the dentists in providing free dental check-ups and treatments to the residents. Neil was pleasantly surprised by the gratitude and appreciation shown by the patients, who were mostly immigrants and low-income families. He realized that Salud was not just about providing medical services but also about building relationships and bridging the gap between different communities.
One of the most memorable experiences for Neil was when he accompanied the Salud team on a medical mission trip to a rural village in Guatemala. The team set up a temporary clinic and provided free medical services to the villagers who had limited access to healthcare facilities. Neil was moved by the resilience and strength of the villagers, who despite their challenging living conditions, were always smiling and grateful for the help provided by Salud. He also got the opportunity to interact with the local healthcare workers and learn about their struggles and the impact of organizations like Salud in improving the health of the community.
Apart from the hands-on experience in the medical field, Neil also learned valuable lessons about cultural sensitivity and inclusivity through his time at Salud. He was exposed to different cultures and traditions, and he learned to appreciate and respect them. Neil also had the opportunity to improve his Spanish language skills, which he believes will be beneficial for his future medical career.
But what truly stood out for Neil was the passion and dedication of the Salud team towards their cause. He was inspired by the leadership of the organization, which was spearheaded by students like him. Under the guidance of the faculty advisor, Dr. Maria Rodriguez, the team worked tirelessly to provide quality healthcare services to the underserved communities. Neil was also impressed by the organization’s efforts to raise awareness about important health issues and promote preventive care in the community.
However, Neil‘s positive experience with Salud was not without its challenges. He was disheartened to learn about the Anti-Semitic incidents that occurred on the UPenn campus, which also affected some members of the Salud team. But instead of letting it discourage them, the Salud team came together and organized a community event to promote unity and celebrate diversity. Neil was proud to be a part of an organization that not only provided healthcare services but also stood up against discrimination and hate.
In conclusion, Neil Gajare‘s experience with Salud has been nothing short of life-changing. It has not only provided him with practical experience in the medical field but also taught him valuable lessons about compassion, inclusivity, and leadership. Salud has not only made a positive impact on the communities it serves but also on the students like Neil, who have been a part of this incredible organization. As Neil looks towards his future in the medical field, he is grateful for the lessons and experiences he gained at Salud, which will stay with him forever.
