Mahumapelo sues Revolutionary Council for defamation

Former North West Premier and African National Congress (ANC) Member of Parliament Supra Mahumapelo has filed a defamation case against the Revolutionary Council and three others at the North West High Court in Mahikeng.

The case was brought forward by Mahumapelo in response to the Revolutionary Council’s alleged defamatory statements made against him in 2019. The statements were made in the form of pamphlets, posters and videos that were distributed and shared on social media platforms.

The Revolutionary Council is a political party that was formed in the North West province in 2017. It is a splinter group of the ANC, and its members are mostly former ANC members who are opposed to the current ANC leadership.

The pamphlets, posters and videos accused Mahumapelo of corruption, nepotism and cronyism. The pamphlets also accused Mahumapelo of misappropriating public funds for his own personal gain.

In his court papers, Mahumapelo has stated that the Revolutionary Council’s statements were false and defamatory and that they have caused him “immense harm and damage”. He has requested that the court order the Revolutionary Council to retract the statements and pay him damages.

Mahumapelo has also requested that the court order the Revolutionary Council to cease and desist from making any further defamatory statements against him.

The case is being heard before Judge Mpho Mokgosi, and it is expected to be a lengthy process. Mahumapelo’s legal team is confident that the case will be successful, and that the court will rule in his favour.

The case has been welcomed by many in the North West province, with many seeing it as a step in the right direction for justice and accountability. It is hoped that the case will set a precedent for other victims of defamation, and that it will deter people from making defamatory statements in the future.

Mahumapelo’s case is a reminder of the importance of upholding the truth and respecting the rights of others. It is also a reminder of the importance of taking legal action against those who make false and defamatory statements.

The outcome of the case will be closely watched by many in the North West province and beyond. It is hoped that the court will make the right decision and that justice will be served.
