The University of Panama has received a generous donation from Cobre Panamá in the form of a 230m2 cultivation facility.
This donation will provide students with the valuable opportunity to create a controlled microclimate with the aim of cultivating healthier fruits and vegetables.
(February 1, 2022 – web) Panama – Cobre Panamá, the company located near the mine, is actively pursuing the promotion of sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural production alternatives within neighboring communities. With this objective in mind, the company has made a significant contribution by donating a 230m2 cultivation facility (tropicalized greenhouse) to the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the Regional University Center of Coclé, University of Panama.
Fulgencio Álvarez, Director of the Coclé University Center, expressed appreciation for this donation, recognizing its importance in enhancing the Agroforestry Engineering program. He emphasized that through this cultivation facility, students will have the opportunity to gain insights into a technology that has been adopted worldwide to produce food efficiently in confined spaces while prioritizing environmental sustainability.
This generous contribution will benefit approximately 100 students specializing in Agricultural Sciences and Forestry Engineering. They will have the unique opportunity to learn within enclosed spaces where they can control temperature, environmental factors, and humidity to create a microclimate. This technology enables out-of-season production, reduces water consumption through automated irrigation, and minimizes the use of phytotoxic chemicals, ultimately leading to healthier fruit and vegetable harvests.
Miguel Jaén, Manager of Community Affairs at Cobre Panamá, encouraged students at the Regional Center to continue their studies and explore these modern agricultural techniques further. He highlighted the company’s 12-year commitment to supporting the complete educational cycle of neighboring communities, which includes programs promoting sustainable production in educational centers and scholarships for higher education, motivating young people to pursue university studies.
Through this initiative, Cobre Panamá also extends its support to the development and ongoing innovation of the Technical Outreach Program for Producers in Coclé, led by the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA). In addition to the cultivation facility, Cobre Panamá has provided a storage facility for supplies, materials, and tools, an irrigation system, and cucumber seeds, all of which will be instrumental in launching the educational activities of this greenhouse.
