The Mining Chamber of Panama (Camipa) expressed a positive view regarding the commencement of negotiations for a new contract between the State of Panama and Minera Panama, S.A. According to the chamber, this process recognizes the importance and relevance of the mining sector in the sustainable development and economic recovery of the country, putting an end to a period of uncertainty caused by the Supreme Court ruling. In a statement, Camipa emphasized that the outcome of the negotiations should be beneficial for all parties involved: the company, the government, and the Panamanian citizens.
The association considers it essential for the agreements reached to “optimize the benefits obtained from the mining sector and send a clear message of confidence to investors, demonstrating that Panama respects the legal security of investments and has appropriately handled the renegotiation.” Camipa stressed the significant importance of these negotiations in conveying a firm message that Panama treats foreign investment fairly, which encourages the influx of capital and stimulates growth not only in the mining sector but in all economic sectors of the country. At a time when economic recovery depends on the generation of quality jobs and the opportunities generated by these investments, these meetings come after the announcement made by President Laurentino Cortizo on Tuesday regarding the commencement of conversations with Minera Panama.
Two months ago, the government established a negotiation team comprising various officials, including the Minister of Trade and Industry, Ramón Martínez, who will act as the coordinator in this process. Other members of the team include the Minister of Economy and Finance, Héctor Alexander, the Minister of Environment, Milciades Concepción, and the Minister of Labor and Labor Development, Doris Zapata, among others.
